USA is not America

Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!

America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

America

How should I use the term America then?

Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:

  • This is how we do it in America.
  • This is how we do it in the States.
  • America is my country and I love it.
  • The United States is my country and I love it.
  • America lost the Vietnam war.
  • U.S.A. lost the Vietnam war.
  • Here in America we love Mc Donald's.
  • Here in the U.S. we love Mc Donald's.

Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

From the Brazilian Senate’s official website:

Jenny(Colombia)says...

There are exceptions. Words like always, no one, everyone, never, etc. tend to be wrongly used. What matters is the correct or the wrong use of "America" and "American", not whether people do it or not.

This site exists to disclose the wrong usage. Something you will not hear in the US TV, its networks and associates.

“No one in Latin America call the US as America nor poeple from the US as American.”

You really believe this is a factual statement? You really think I can’t easily prove this wrong? You are completely out of your element.

Andysays...

Prove it, go ahead.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

Hey Andy! I think Morgan did just prove … that Brazilians in Latin America really do use Americano (the Spanish word) to refer to the residents of United States rather than the residents of the 2 American Continents.

He posted a link on “1st July 2021 11:54pm”.

Even so, that is RIDICULOUS because Brazilians have to realize … they too are Americans (or Americanos). They are incorrectly using American/Americano if they are referring to the residents of United States only.

If you haven’t seen the comments from Brazilians, then feel free to click on the link that Morgan sent.

Morgan you are so ignorant, by the time that he proclaim that, he was in exile in guess where? The US. I already told you keep you mouth shout, instead of embarassing yourself.

Morgansays...

What extended use? No one in Latin America call the US as America nor poeple from the US as American.
