Has anyone ever heard Mexico being referred to as the United Mexican States? Even Nieto said MEXICO would not pay for that ***** wall! Who is this Mexico he is referring to?

Jayden Hill(United States)says...

nieto literally means grandchild

Mexico is not a name of a continent. America is. Therefore, using the name america to refer to one country only is misguided. Invent a name for the US that's more fortunate. I'm calling it Usonia and people who live in it Usonians.

Yeah, and America -- as in USA -- is a country older than all others on the American continents. We've been called Americans by ourselves and by the rest of the world since the beginning. As per Wikipedia:

The United States of America declared independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776, thus becoming the first independent, foreign-recognized nation in the Americas and the first European colonial entity to break from its mother country.

It's easy if you try. Americans are a nationality, the USA, and we have been Americans longer than the rest of the inhabitants have even been countries.

Spirit of '76(United States)says...

rest of the inhabitants of the American continent/s.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

No one cares about USA history (whether it comes from Wikipedia or yourself).

Americans cannot be a nationality, it has nothing to do with the USA, and you people haven’t been Americans longer than the rest of the inhabitants of the 2 American continents. Your country did not invent the name America after all.

America is 2 continents and they are bigger than 1 country. Americans are the identity of 2 continents, North America and South America, and South Americans have been Americans longer than your country of United States since America was originally the name that was given to the continent (back in 1507) - now known as South America today.

You don't care about American history, at any rate. Too busy being envious, I suppose. Or maybe you just don't like facts. Those of us who live here, were born here, and whose ancestors founded the place, do care. I've tried to keep it simple for you, but one more time. Citizens of the USA are Americans in two senses, 1) They are citizens of a country called America, and 2)they are more broadly inhabitants of a continent/s called North America or simply America. When you ask anyone in the world who is an American, an Ecuadoran, Chilean, Mexican or Canadian is not what comes to mind, and you know that the inhabitants of those latter countries consider themselves something other than Americans first. In the same way, someone in France is going to consider themselves as French before European. Human, are, have been, and will be, tribal in nature.

Again, Americans of the USA have been calling themselves Americans since our founding. We aren't going to stop.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

Again, USA citizens can only be American in the 2-Continent sense but NOT in the nationality sense. I will take everything you say just as an excuse.

US people are gonna have to stop referring to their country as America and themselves as Americans because their country’s name isn’t America even though they have been calling their country that for over 200 years.

Thanks for trying to keep it simple for me though.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

I DO CARE about American History actually, but just NOT USA History.

I’m not going against facts, but only against your opinions that you think are facts because they are not.

As you say “the inhabitants of those latter countries consider themselves something other than Americans first. In the same way, someone in France is going to consider themselves as French before European.”, THE TRUTH IS United States citizens must follow by the same example as all the other countries do by considering themselves something other than Americans first, whether you and your country like it or not.

As you say “Humans, are, have been, and will be, tribal in nature.”, that will not have anything to do with the name America and the demonym American.

Finally, being as “America” is not the official short name of USA, that proves “American(s)” is not the official demonym of USA’s nationality!
