USA is not America

Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!

America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

America

How should I use the term America then?

Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:

  • This is how we do it in America.
  • This is how we do it in the States.
  • America is my country and I love it.
  • The United States is my country and I love it.
  • America lost the Vietnam war.
  • U.S.A. lost the Vietnam war.
  • Here in America we love Mc Donald's.
  • Here in the U.S. we love Mc Donald's.

Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

America has divided into 2 separate continents! They are North and South America and they become 1 Whole Continent together narrowing down into 1 word - America!

I am also thinking of other words as well that follow by the same example!

North and South America are 2 continents, North and South Korea are 2 countries, North and South Carolina are 2 states (in the USA) and North, East, South and West Vancouver are 4 cities (of British Columbia in Canada)!

I am NOT calling North and South America - The Americas, Pan America or anything else. I am only calling them just America!

... to be continued!

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

... (previous comment continued)!

I am NOT calling North and South Korea - The Koreas, Pan Korea or anything else. I am only calling them just Korea!

I am NOT calling North and South Carolina - The Carolinas, Pan Carolina or anything else. I am only calling them just Carolina!

I am NOT calling North, East, South and West Vancouver - The Vancouvers, Pan Vancouver or anything else. I am only calling them just Vancouver!

... Everyone should get the idea now that when there are 2 or More places involving the same word (like I just said about America, Korea, Carolina and Vancouver), they should ALWAYS be seen as different parts of the 1 Word (the last word of their official names)! This is after all my opinion!

If you don't have anything nice to say back, then PLEASE DO NOT talk back to me, Thanks!

Davesays...

You can not call North and South America just "America"

Davidsays...

Why not? Of course he can. That is definitely not the most common meaning of the word in English, but it is one of the meanings of the word.

Davesays...

answering to your question "Stupid David":

what's the point of this website?, If the USA is not America then none of Those American countries are America neither.

"United States Of America" is not the same as - United States of America.

So Stupid David, you are as stupid as the Real and true Canadian American.

Once both of you chill out and learn more about grammar then you would be less stupid.

Davesays...

why?, because when you mention America I see it as I should, "a continent" that is not just North and South.

Why?, because it was in this continent that NON-AMERICAN established their colonies.

Why?, because other advanced civilizations registered masses of lands as America in their books.

Why?, because not everyone is clear about grammar.

Did you know that 2+3=5? Good!, sure you did not know that 0.002+7(3)-3(-3)/3<5.003.

That's exactly what's happening here. Same discussion going nowhere other than growing stupid minds.

Davidsays...

I need to pull up my boots. The BS is getting really thick.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

Dave, I am NOT stupid. NEVER think that way and mention that again.

Yes, North and South America ARE America because both have ‘America’ in their official names! I absolutely can describe them as JUST America!

Like I said before, PLEASE DO NOT reply back at me - if you don’t have anything nice to say. Languages have nothing to do with words such as America. You must learn how to talk nicer, period.

Annoying David is the ONLY negative one on this Website.

Davesays...

is America seriously 2 continents?. You are stupid.

is Africa also two continents because of North and South Africa?, broh you are so stupid.

"Of America" is not the same as is just "of America", there is a capital "O" in the word "Of" and that grammatically makes a very obvious definition to understand unless you are still stupid.

"The United States Of America".

And yes, it still remains complicated to understand worldwide. It is complicated when expressed in a context (either from the speaker or listener).

And because it is "Of America" and not "of America" it is welcome to call them "American Citizen".

It is your problem if you lack understanding.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

'Of America' is the same thing as 'of America' or 'OF America'! Grammar has NOTHING to do with it as I'm talking about the country 'United States of America'. You have a stubborn mind. The Administrator has to delete your stupid comment.

It really DOES NOT MATTER how I spell words. They are always the same words and have the same meaning. I can spell America in any way - america, AmErIcA, aMeRiCa, AMERICA - all I want. Stop talking Non-Sense and GET OVER IT.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

I would be happy to meet USA people in person - (to those) who all agree and say ‘America is a Continent! It is divided up into 2 parts (in other words, 2 smaller continents)! The 2 of them are North and South America’!

Only then, I may have the chance to tell them - what their demonym should be for their country (in my opinion)! I rather not talk to those who say ‘America is a country’. I don’t like all those who misinterpret America or American and refer to the USA citizens only rather than the whole continent itself.

Every downvote I get, I will assume - they are just disagreeing with me and not really saying anything else!

Davesays...

be happy with the downvotes, it means they are American.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

Greenlanders, Canadians and Latin Americans ARE ALL AMERICANS too!

So “American(s)” is NOT THE NATIONAL DEMONYM FOR THE COUNTRY OF USA. “United States” and “United Statesian” IS THE CORRECT TERM for their nationality!

Davidsays...

Craig Lungren, prepare to be destroyed.

Mrs. Roda Saris Setsuko Anonymous, where are you? Please enlighten us with more of your “facts”. We need to hear more about how ‘America’ isn’t a word. And about what the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee call the USA. And how it is humans who create, use, and change human language. What will we do without your wisdom? We are truly lost without your proven omniscience. Come back to us.

Anubis Barba(Mexico)says...

This bothers me a lot but I understand that is just part of the whole thing about taking things away from others and make it your own.

Grammar is complexsays...

"The United States of America" never took anything from anybody, they don't have the need and would not waste their time in so.

If you think they are wrong because they acquired "of America" automatically for obviousness reasons then the problem is yours.

If you live in America then "The States" is short for "United States"

Living in America?, then "United States" is enough.

Living in Europe, Africa, Oceania or Asia, appropriately would be "United States of America".

Now, if The United States of America goes back to the Moon and broadcasts that, it should be enough to say "American Moon Landing".

Zubinell(United States)says...

The VietNam war was not a war between USA and VietNam so how did USA lose it?

Anubis Barba(Mexico)says...

Nobody said that the United States lost the war, it was an example... Gosh.

Denis Gauthier(Canada)says...

And how you call a usa resident? American is used.

Stupid Questionsays...

a Canadian "Resident" does not have to be American.

a Canadian "Resident" might be from Asia (let's say Japan) and obviously is wrong to tell that person is American.

Same thing applies if the same person is living in the "United States of America"

“Durante muchos años muchos hispanohablantes de muchos países pronunciaron muchas veces la palabra americano para referirse a los habitantes de los Estados Unidos de América o a lo relacionado con aquel país.”

“Y llegó el día en el que ocurrió lo inevitable —nuestra lengua cambia— y apareció una nueva acepción de americano en la edición del 2001 del Diccionario, y decía: ‘estadounidense’.”

Mrs. Roda Saris Anonymous, could you translate this for me?

“¡Bravo! Finalmente parece que El País nos está poniendo atención a sus lectores americanos, a quienes nos incomoda profundamente que los reporteros y articulistas de este diario, se refieran a Estados Unidos de América simplemente como América.”
