USA is not America

Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!

America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

America

How should I use the term America then?

Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:

  • This is how we do it in America.
  • This is how we do it in the States.
  • America is my country and I love it.
  • The United States is my country and I love it.
  • America lost the Vietnam war.
  • U.S.A. lost the Vietnam war.
  • Here in America we love Mc Donald's.
  • Here in the U.S. we love Mc Donald's.

Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

AmericanFromTheAmericassays...

Well something that bothers me about this, is the fact that there are multiple synonym words to "avoid" confusions even though it's all basically the same... But with a minimum confusing variation.

Let's say for example England, that is in the United kingdom, in Europe. And now let's compare it to the United States of America that is in North America which is in The Americas... It's even worse with demonyms. "I'm an American from North America in the Americas"

So it's funny that "America" is only a part of North America

It was in The Asias toosays...

And it was in The Africas too.

You are stupid.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

At least the Africans got it right, South Africa is in Africa. Not like the USA which calls itself America but being in North of America??? It's like thinking backwards. Can we put America in North of America? only if America was bigger than North of America, which it is! The continent is bigger than North of America, thus America, then North America, then the USA.

Let it be stupidsays...

America needs no north or south.

Chances are that if you put your finger in a map to list where America is, you most likely point out anywhere in America.

"Anywhere" in this case could be "The United States Of America", which (for Lord Jesus) is actually America.

God bless you

The Europessays...

Ha, how stupid that sounds.

That's because you are stupid hahahaha

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Have any of you heard of the "Pan-American Highway" or in Spanish La carretera Pan-Americana? Its a highway that crosses most if not all of the countries in America. Hence Pan-American. pan-

a combining form meaning “all,” occurring originally in loanwords from Greek American: from America. So: Pan-American is All American Highway. Not Pan Americas, not Las Pan Americas Highway, no, but Pan American Highway or in Spanish, Carretera Panamericana.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Pan= All

American= from America

thus,

PanAmerican or All from America..or..all of America.

A continental highway in America.

Not in the USA but in America

Davidsays...

Thanks, Mrs. Obvious. And the other meanings you don’t like continue their existence. Your pathetic denials don’t change reality.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

There is no other meaning to the once coined named of America! If you want to refer to the nickname that the U.S. wants to go by, for example, America, that name means the continent of America, no matter how you put it, how you want to explain that words change meanings, your insistence on that will not make the name America change the meaning which was given when first coined/made originated to mean a continent. So, the United States of America, means those States which united to become a nation in America, so the name is actually using the continent's name and my friend, that is the true meaning of the word America even when used by the U.S. in its country's name.

You know that alreadysays...

if you know that they use it in its country name, why are you so pathetic about?

You are still stupid.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Are you denying the fact that there is a Pan American Highway that goes all over America the continent?

you are still Stupidsays...

Hey Mrs. stupid, when you mentions America, I already understood enough for you to tell me "the continent".

If there is already a highway going across America, that highway would make me think about the only America that I know.

Remember, there are not 2 America, just one. For you to say "of the continent" reveals how bad and poorly is your thinking.

Maybe because English is not your native language could be an excuse but not really.

You are just stupid.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

People in the United States have been conditioned to parroting what they are saying right on this forum. They can't comprehend that there is more history than the one they have been told by their masters before the U.S. became a nation but somehow their brains are not ready to take that much load. They go crazy with questions like, "Where did the U.S. get the name "Of America" from? Since they are deniers of a continent named America, they are lost in confusion land..lol

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Something interesting to ponder regarding the U.S. and the name of the continent-form Wikipedia: Historically, the United States of America saw itself as a blossoming continental nation-state. Accordingly, the first governing body for the North American colonists was called the Continental Congress,[1][2] which sought to receive delegates from across the British colonized areas of the continent, including the future Canadian provinces of Quebec and Nova Scotia.

Continentalism in the United States was developed through the expeditions and experiences of frontier expansion on the American frontier. In the nineteenth century, the ideology of continentalism became internationalised by the growing concept of Manifest destiny, to create a belief amongst state and commercial leaders that the United States would help spread Western civilisation from Europe to the rest of the world[3]. Between 1840-1898, American continentalism began to involve ideas on overseas expansion..."

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

David: ou continue with the crazy explanation of yours that the map had the name "America" in what is the South of America. BAH! If you read antique maps, names sometimes are not necessarily right on top of the whole thing. Anyways, Europeans gave the new world its name to the continent, that is "America",and the name stuck as more lands were discovered. You seem to skip that part. So, let me ask you, when the USA extended itself all the way to the West annexing the Mexican states of California, COlorado, etc, according to your way of thinking, that new part is not under the United States name? Give me a break!

Davidsays...

Don’t forget about Parias, payasa.

Davidsays...

Of course it is under the name of the USA. It’s part of the USA. What the hell are you babbling about?

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Of course is under the USA and not Mexico because as the USA expanded so the does the name. Same happen with America, as the continent expanded and found more lands, the name "America" also expanded and all those lands became part of the new continent, America.

Mexico(Mexico)says...

We are not paying for that wall in America.

Paulsays...

America was asking for an economic support from you fellows but that is fine.

Now, everybody else is opposed to that wall, leaving America the way it has been.

The greatest wall of America. Not (Of) in uppercase letter, thus in this case "of America" is not a composed named as it is in "The United States Of America" which is a name of 4 conjoined words. Thank you.

The greatest wall in America. Or maybe "The Greatest Wall In America" (for the haters).

The United States Of America

Paulsays...

Is there any other country named America?.

Which other country is named America?

There is not any other country named America other than:

The United States Of America.

Deal with it!.

You loose and I win this game.

The United States Of America.

And please, don't tell me to write the word "of" in lower case because, you are stupid.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

No, the only thing with that name is a continent, America is a continent.

Davidsays...

And a country, as you well know. Stop your pathetic pretending.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

The United States uses Of America because of the continent it is located in.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

no you are the one pretending. Is it true that there is a continent that was name "America" after a Amerigo Vespucci? That this name was written on a map of the new world in the side where Brazil is today? Isn't it true that this map was hanged on German and European Universities as accepted by the society in those days to be the new world, and its name is America? Is it true that the United States was not even a thought in 1507? That the USA was born about 200 or so years after the continent was named America? Isn't it in the history books that the people in the U.S. wanted to make a continental nation thereby the idea of adding "of America" to the new nation?

Davidsays...

“The United States uses Of America because of the continent it is located in.”

Thanks, Mrs. Obvious.

Davidsays...

The ‘of’ isn’t capitalized. You are already bad enough, so don’t stoop to Dave’s level.

Disguised Mrs.Anonymoussays...

your bad English won't let you think any farther.

Everything is too american for you.

America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Perfecto, y como es tu castellano?

american(Argentina)says...

The composition of a name conjoined in four words which describes as follows:

United States Of America.

It actually has nothing to do with a name that is already a single word and means something, not else, but genetic.

America brings imaginations.

America stood in the western hemisphere.

And until today it still remains America!, Western harmony, new horizons, the great America!.

Then America was invaded by people that became Americans.

Those invadors named America.

After a while, those invadors named other countries in America.

One of those countries is one composed of four words as described at the beginning.

Canada is one of those countries.

Then there is The United States Of America, but, you are stupid.

Fabián(Argentina)says...

there is none, but there is one that includes the word America in its name, United States of America

Davidsays...

And it’s very commonly called ‘America’, so that’s one of its NAMES.

Paulsays...

If it includes America as part of its name, what makes you think America is not a country?

No further discussion, you loose and I win this game.

It makes you stupid. That is why you are stupid.

The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

yes because they had a continental idea early in their history, so they used the name of the continent.

Davidsays...

Thanks, Mrs. Obvious. You bring so much to the table.

Paulsays...

No one would take away America from its name.

What are you pretending?, to call Mexico "United States of Mexico?.

Sorry dude. America already belongs to someone else.

Its name, United States Of America.

America is America and no one else has that name as a country.

Sorry stupid idiot.

You are still stupid.

The United States Of America

MexicanNotAmerican(Mexico)says...

In Mexico we got united as Mexicans.

That's why it is United Mexican States.

Not "United American States" because we are not Americans, we are Mexicans.

Cheung(China)says...

In China they would say that you are from America.

Sarah(Australia)says...

If you are Mexican, we could say that you are american in Australia too.

But if you are stupid, you probably feel bad about it.

MexicanNotAmerican(Mexico)says...

more respect please, Ok?

We are talking about America.

It is my choice if I wanted to act stupid but I would not be so stupid overthere.

Mexico

Davidsays...

Mrs. Anonymous wrote: “If you read what happened, yes they took Texas thanks to the inhabitants there who chose to go with the U.S.. but they could not go down to Mexico and they retrieved.”

“Scott took Veracruz in March after a siege of three weeks and began the march to Mexico City. Despite some Mexican resistance, Scott’s campaign was marked by an unbroken series of victories, and he entered Mexico City on September 14, 1847. The fall of the Mexican capital ended the military phase of the conflict.”

“...Mexico ceded to the United States nearly all the territory now included in the states of New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, Texas, and western Colorado...”

https://www.britannica.com/event/Mexican-American-War/Invasion-and-war

Davidsays...

Spread into Mexico??

Yes. Mexico.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

The whole thing was because of Texas! Glad you included more information. Okay, they did get to Mexico City, but the U.S. did not expanded and took all of Mexico, as some people wanted to do, (look for "All of Mexico Movement"). So, the U.S. retrieved that idea and Mexico had to give up the lands you mentioned, and the U.S paid like $15 million or so for them. Guadalupe Hidalgo somehow ended that expansion and the war. But,thank you for bringing the info that supports what I said about the U.S. idea of expanding throughout the continent. Gives more credence to the idea that the name they chose was because they were looking for a continental united states of America. Therefore, the name America was chosen as the United States were located in America.

Davidsays...

I was right. Again. You were wrong. Again.

“Therefore, the name America was chosen as the United States were located in America.”

Thanks, Mrs. Obvious. Of course the name came from the continent. I have never argued any differently. I have never stated anything here that isn’t factually accurate. You definitely can’t say the same thing. You have never proven wrong anything that I have written here. Stop pretending that I am claiming that the name ‘America’ came from anywhere other than the continent. You are ***** that I have proven you wrong so many times, so you pretend that I don’t know more about these things than you do, and that I claim things that are false. You have NEVER proven me wrong. NEVER!!!

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

So what is the name of the continent again?

Fabián(Argentina)says...

in English to say "America" is short for "United States of America" in informal daily use (the official one is "United States")

To say America in Spanish is to refer to South America and North America together.

stupid Languagesays...

No matter what language you speak.

Argentina is Argentina and America is America.

But, you are stupid.

You, stupid idiot.

The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

So how can one be so stupid that thinks America is for the country and not for the continent when the name was COINED for a continent! There is no historical fact one can find where the United States baptizes the country with a name that is not the continent's. Or where do you think America came from?

Davidsays...

Thanks, Mrs. Obvious.

Davidsays...

‘United States’ is the short form of the name. ‘United States of America’ is the official name. ‘America’ is an alternative name.

There are Spanish speakers who use ‘América’ to refer to the USA. There are Spanish speakers who use ‘Americano’ to refer to US citizens. Let’s not pretend otherwise.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

so what is to say Africa in English and Asia or how do you say it in Spanish? Is it only America the one that has the problem with the English using it only for a country? Many other countries teach five continent model and America is just one.

american(Argentina)says...

You are born in Canada, you are Canadian,

You are Born in Mexico, you are Mexican.

Why does there have to be an issue when it comes to the name "America"?

They are born in America, and they would forever be Americans!

But, all of you prefer to act stupid.

Born in America means that he is American.

The United States Of America

american(Argentina)says...

maybe she is american.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

wrong, if I was born in Costa Rica, I am a Costa Rican, but also an American from the continent of America. Just like a person born in Italy, is Italian, and also an European from the continent of Europe.
