USA is not America

Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!

America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

America

How should I use the term America then?

Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:

  • This is how we do it in America.
  • This is how we do it in the States.
  • America is my country and I love it.
  • The United States is my country and I love it.
  • America lost the Vietnam war.
  • U.S.A. lost the Vietnam war.
  • Here in America we love Mc Donald's.
  • Here in the U.S. we love Mc Donald's.

Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

David since you think you are better than anyone else here, can you explain how the continent went from "America"(we had established before that this is the name given to the continent and accepted by the world) to "The Americas"?

Davidsays...

Learn how to do your own research. Read books. Learn how to accurately comprehend the material. Learn how to draw valid conclusions from the material. Stop stating falsehoods. Stop denying obvious and readily verifiable facts that don’t support your fantasies, wishes, worldview, and prejudices.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

But you are the best in that so are you trying to avoid the answer to poor me that can't get facts since they might not exists but you seem to have them all. Since you know how to do everything then you shouldn't have any problems answering this questions.

Davidsays...

You are so pathetic.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

But David all you do is avoid the question why?

Goliathsays...

Read a United Statian book!

Davidsays...

You are so clever. Thanks for your helpful links to facts. Well done.

Morrison and Teeter(United States)says...

...an awareness of gender and power relations. Grabbing ***** and the non-too-subtle violence that pervades the locker room talk of a group of white/United Statian men in power is now open...

Read the comment from Alfonso within the Top Likes: "That's the united statian propaganda! (Hollywood and news channels)"

:) very simple

Davidsays...

You’re the one who is very simple. :-)

In your simplemindedness you choose to call it American propaganda. That’s fine. We can all live with that. But the dictionary entries are factually accurate, and that meaning of America existed before cinema, radio, and television. Try again.

Davidsays...

And even if it were true that the meaning of America as the USA only existed because of American propaganda, it still exists. It doesn’t magically cease to exist just because you mistakenly think it only exists due to American propaganda. This is reality, not your fantasy realm.

Anonymoussays...

Thanks for accepting it's United Statian propaganda. Indeed, the power of media is a reality.

We, your American, Asian and African neighbors can't do anything about that. Maybe China will hahaha.

Juansays...

Good one Anonymous. David, as you agree, you can give a thumbs up linking such comment. But do not vote 20 times please, that would not be fair.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Hahah! Yes please David 20 or 30 votes against a true statement from history gives you in.

Davidsays...

“There is nothing in English that calls America...”

This is one of those times when you are clearly, undeniably, indisputably WRONG. How can you claim that nothing is called ‘America’ in English? It’s ridiculous enough to claim that the US isn’t called ‘America’ in English, but to claim that NOTHING is called ‘America’ in English is simply nonsense. What the F are you thinking? This website wouldn’t exist if the US weren’t commonly called ‘America’. Please think before posting. We get enough unadulterated BS from Mrs. Anonymous. We don’t need you to add to it. Thanks.

Fabián(Argentina)says...

There is nothing in English that calls America, they are:

-South America

-North America

-The United States of America

But nothing called just America.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

I will add that when it is convenient for the U.S. Central America is also in their vocabulary especially when it deals with illegal immigrants from that part of the continent.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

And to let others understand that this Central America is not actually in the middle of the United States, the one they think is America, but it is actually the middle of the continent of America.

Juansays...

This one really hurts David x 28

Fabián(Argentina)says...

I think that the indignation is calmed when knowing that they had to invent patches in their language, and some are interesting and knowing them is useful:

America = the Americas

American = Pan American

South America = continent

North America = continent

America = informal abbreviation for The United States of America

Fabián(Argentina)says...

CORRECTED VERSION, SORRY

I think that the indignation is calmed when knowing that they had to invent patches in their language, and some are interesting and knowing them is useful:

América = the Americas

americano = Pan American

South America = continent

North America = continent

America = informal abbreviation for The United States of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Pan-America, Panamericano, Panamericana, or in English Panamerican. Not Panamericas, Panamericasno, Panamericasna, Panamericasn. What does it mean? Prefix. Pan -, a prefix from the Greek πᾶν, pan , meaning "all", "of everything", or "involving all members" of a group. All of America = Pan America. And it doesn't mean the USA. The carretera Panamericana does not only go through the U.S.A. but throughout America the continent. Pan-Americana Pan-American doesn't relate to the USA only and as you can see it means Everything in America is American not the USA though.

Em(Canada)says...

Ooooopa new stuff here!!

Mrs. Anonymoussays...
