America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

In the English-speaking countries their geography teaches something different from most other countries of other languages for which "America" is a continent, and which is divided into regions, south, north and center. In the English-speaking South America is a continent not a region, and the same with North America. This is why for an English speaker the word America alone seems to be vacant. That is the root of all this problem I think.

Correcto! The root of the problem is that the U.S. needed to keep the name of the continent and so it divided the continent into two and ran with that idea...and spread it around the world. It is so obvious!
