USA is not America

Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!

America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

America

How should I use the term America then?

Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:

  • This is how we do it in America.
  • This is how we do it in the States.
  • America is my country and I love it.
  • The United States is my country and I love it.
  • America lost the Vietnam war.
  • U.S.A. lost the Vietnam war.
  • Here in America we love Mc Donald's.
  • Here in the U.S. we love Mc Donald's.

Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Jamaica, Peru, Paraguay, Mexico, United States of America, Uruguay, Venezuela are in the ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES.

????

Davidsays...

And the USA is STILL commonly known all over the world as ‘America’.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Pardon, it is "mistakenly" Known as America but it is not America!

Davidsays...

There is no mistake. If there were a mistake, then your precious definition of America would also be mistaken.

StupidDaviddisguisedasFabiánsays...

Americans with bad English language discussing about America. Critical opinions.

America, the country known globally and it hurts to a bunch of idiots who are jealous about it.

Get your facts straight and stop the hate.

America is America and will forever be America!

The United States Of America!

United States For Americasays...

I guess, since part of its name is the word "of" which is a preposition, then it could be easily replaced by another preposition.

Then its name could be written in different forms, such as:

"United States for America"

"The United States in America"

"The United States from America"

"The United States hence America"

You write down a name and the word "of" is no longer a preposition because it becomes a noun that should be capitalized. Hence "Of", not "of".

The Real and True America(Canada)says...

Your comment is totally made up “United States For America”.

I can spell the word "of" in every way possible, such as “of”, “oF”, “Of” and “OF”, but will always be “a preposition” no matter how the word is written and never will be replaced by another preposition.

USA’s name could not be written in different forms, such as …

"United States for America"

"The United States in America"

"The United States from America"

"The United States hence America"

… if that idea is to only take away the New World’s name/demonym, which are “America” and “American”. It is wrong for USA to steal those 2 words and claim them both all to itself, when in fact THE 2 WORDS DO NOT BELONG TO USA ALONE.

You write down a name and the word "of" remains as “a preposition” because nothing makes it become a noun, whether it is capitalized or not. Hence "Of", IS "of", “oF” and “OF”!

U.S. congressman Lucas M. Miller of Wisconsin was an odd dude. He served just one term in the House, and when you look at the bills he introduced it's easy to guess why. Back in 1893, Miller proposed abolishing the Army and Navy, wiping out pension laws, and even wanted to amend the U.S. Constitution to rename the United States of America to something a bit more sci-fi: "The United States of Earth."

Why would he want to do this? Was it some proto-hippie way of saying that the U.S. was just part of a larger global community? Nope. It was because Miller believed that the U.S. empire would expand so much that it would eventually swallow up the entire world.

North-America(Canada)says...

I am from Canada and I say that I am North-Armerican to anybody in America.

If I happen to go to China, for them I would simply be an American.

In America I am North-American.

American is used to name a person from The USA.

Since the populist USA now aspires to be a socialist republic, how bout “Made in Yankeestan?”

I know it hurts.

This is a stupid website along with a bunch of stupid idiots who don't know how to properly speak English and are trying to discuss about America.

Maybe create a website in your native language and stop spreading hate about America.

They are mad because the name American is for the people of The United States Of America.

Stupid ignorants, get your facts straight in your own language and don't force yourself to speak none-sense about America with your low level of English dialect.

In English we call you South American, in Argentina you call yourself SurAmericano but never "American".

The word "American" already belong to The USA like it or not.

When people say Hispanic-American is because they probably saw an Argentinian passed by.

In China they saw the same Argentinian and they said, look, an American!(and nobody complaint).

The United States Of America

SouthAmericasays...

that Argentinian brought one of those Chinese to America to ask other Americans the same question that if he was still an American in Argentina and the Chinese said -"Yes, you are American!"

MadeinAmericasays...

does this really mean that it is made in the USA?.

Sorry, you are stupid!.

Made in America, up to you Stupid.

The United States Of America

The Real and True America(Canada)says...

It is NOT A STUPID WEBSITE. It does not matter what language is spoken.

AMERICA IS AMERICA IN EVERY LANGUAGE, and It Is A Continent, not a country!

USA IS NOT AMERICA .com is A BEAUTIFUL and TRUTHFUL WEBSITE!

In fact, you are one of those Stupid Ignorants that I know.

Fabián(Argentina)says...

If the citizens of the United States of America can only say America when referring to their nation, we South Americans can only say America when referring to our "continent" and name ourselves "Americanos".

Davidsays...

What about Mexicans and Central Americans?

Davidsays...

Brazilians are South Americans and they often refer to US citizens as ‘Americanos’.

Davidsays...

Actually, in Portuguese the word isn’t capitalized, so it’s ‘americano’.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Everyone in this continent is American. The U.S. is also in America. They name their new nation USA and its meaning is very well known in history. They became sovereign States and because they wanted to form a more perfect union (in order to defend the new nation from the Europeans especially the British Crown) they envisioned an entire continent together against the European Kingdoms of British, Spain, Portugal, Belgium etc. to be the United States of America. Yes, they had this vision! They could only spread all the way to California and down to Florida, but they couldn't spread into Mexico. Their vision was to extend as far as they could by Manifest Destiny. So, if they wanted to only spread in North America, then if this was the name of a continent, the would had named the new nation "United States of North America". But since North America was not a continent but a subcontinent of America, they chose the name of the continent: America.

Davidsays...

Mrs. Anonymous wrote: “...they couldn’t spread into Mexico.”

So when the United States took about half of Mexico’s territory, this wasn’t spreading into Mexico? Why am I not surprised that you can’t get your facts straight?

Juansays...

hahahaha what a joke.

Excuse her, she is also human and we as humans are ignorants.

If you write down a name, you write it:

The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

If you read what happened, yes they took Texas thanks to the inhabitants there who chose to go with the U.S.. but they could not go down to Mexico and they retrieved.

Davidsays...

You have no clue, Mrs. Anonymous.

FakeMrs.Anonymoussays...

"Of America" is part of its name.

Who cares the continent's name is America or no.

Change the name of the continent and it will still have "Of America" in its name.

It is too American for you probably.

The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

This is what they actually did! and since you say "Who cares" meaning that no respect was shown to the other countries in the same continent when stealing its name. So, who Didn't respect who first?

Rorysays...

Incorrect: “America First.”

Correct: “USA First.”

And I’m sorry to see that excessive trolling has made everybody here mentally handicapped.

The United States Of Aztecasays...

The United States Of Azteca

Rorysays...

Incorrect: “America First.”

Correct: “USA First.”

Remember, yanks are not Americans. They are better than everybody else in this hemisphere, and are entitled to special treatment from all their neighbors in all international treaties in this hemisphere.

Stupid David disguised as Rorysays...

America first is the same as USA first.

That you understand otherwise is your problem.

Tell a Chinese "north Asian" and he/she might get offended.

America is an American word created by English people.

They still deserve the credit for it.
